Constructing Homemade Bathroom Vanity Fixtures

by Wyatt Fisk

Highly functional contemporary bathroom furniture pieces such as the vanity is becoming an important bathroom fixture because of its ability to hold multiple items such as drawers, mirror and the sink. In these economic times however, having your own bathroom vanity can be considered as a luxury as this fixture can be quite expensive. However, if you really want to have your own bathroom vanity, you may want to consider bringing down your old cabinet or dresser from your attic, and make it a vanity project that you would surely enjoy making. Below are simple steps that you could follow to achieve a modern looking bath vanity made from your old cabinet or dresser.

Making antique dressers or cabinets into modern bathroom vanities, whether a double sink or single vessel, requires few and easy alterations. The tools that you need to have for this project includes a cabinet or dresser, saw, sink fixtures, pencil, plumbing fixtures, screws, sealant and paint, L-brackets, anchors, and drill. To begin with your vanity project, measure your cabinet and dresser; this is important to know the type and size of sink that you would be using. If you would like to save more money, you could still use your old bathroom sink. However, removing an old sink would only eat your time as it is laborious, so it would be better to purchase a new sink which would also complement the modern vanity design you want to achieve.

Once you already have your sink, set it aside for a while since it will not be used on the initial stages of your vanity construction. Focus first on your cabinet or dresser by removing all its drawers, and at the back make a hole where you will slide your sink plumbing. Because modern bathroom vanities are stand alone furnishings, it is important to properly measure and mark the plumbing on your wall before making a whole at the back of your cabinet, so that you can be assured that the plumbing would complement your dresser or cabinet once you attach the whole fixture to the wall. If you're done doing the holes, sand it off to achieve a smooth finish.

To achieve the look of modern bathroom vanities, you have two options when installing your sink. First, if you're using a traditional sink or your old sink that sits flat on the counter, begin tracing the opening of the sink on the top of your cabinet, and then cut this opening with a jigsaw. As for the second option, if you are to use a bowl type sink, carefully read the installation instructions included in the package of your sink in order to know what type of hole plumbing you have to make, and simply follow these guidelines. If you're through cutting, test fit the sink, drain fittings and plumbing connections to make sure that they appropriately suit each other.

After fitting the sink, remove it first and paint your furniture that would correspond to the color palette of your bathroom. If you have to make some modifications, attend to them all before you paint your cabinet and before you permanently install your sink. Once your cabinet paint dries up, attach your contemporary bathroom furniture to the wall with the use of a drill, L-brackets and anchors, which would support your vanity. Then, start placing your sink.

In order to properly place your sink on the cabinet, flip your sink over and place a sealant around its inside lip. After doing this, carefully lower your sink to the vanity and remove excess sealant that could affect the exterior appeal of your vanity. Finally, connect the water supply lines to the sink. Now, you can indulge on the beauty and functions of your homemade modern bath vanity.

Contemporary bathroom furniture, such as modern bathroom vanities, is very popular among homeowners and home designers. However, as vanities can be a bit expensive, many homeowners prefer making their own modern bath vanity from their old furnishings such as cabinets and dressers. Aside from saving money, a home made vanity also allows you to make room for your own design.
